David Rolston
Principal
Dave’s inventiveness and passion for gardening finds expression in his landscape design through many of his choices, which often employ native plants, plants adapted to local conditions, and experiments with unfamiliar perennials.
“One of the things I most enjoy is learning about what a person likes and who they are as people… then finding coherent ways to express that in the landscape.”
Dave became a registered landscape architect in 1982 and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Landscape Architecture from Iowa State University. Directly out of school, he joined a design build firm in Minneapolis. Shortly after he moved to Dallas and worked with James E. Lambert and Associates. Then in 1984 Dave set out and founded his own firm and has been digging and designing beautiful landscapes in Dallas and beyond ever since.
Dave is interested in all of the arts and collaborates with many architect friends and with his wife Julie Cohn, a fine artist who currently designs and manufactures an artisan jewelry line.) They work on their garden together and brainstorm ideas, Dave with his more functional design sensibility and Julie with an artist perspective. The mixing of the two directions opens and stimulates the creative process in both their work.
Dave also enjoys his time tinkering in his own large backyard oasis at his home in the Lakewood neighborhood of Dallas. He says, “It’s my playground and laboratory. It’s a fun place to learn and experiment with plants and design.”
Patrick Boyd
Principal, Senior Designer
Patrick has worked with David Rolston since 1996, beginning at Rolston & Bonick, the firm’s popular Dallas garden shop (now closed), as a buyer and landscape designer. He still loves the hunt for the unique and unusual in garden antiques, ornaments and accessories, and incorporating such finds into his client’s landscape designs. By specifying exterior furniture, fabric, accessories and architectural paint choices congruent with a landscape design plan, Patrick is able to provide his clients a balanced and cohesive landscape, tailored to suit their individual requirements.
“I endeavor to design landscapes that respond to the local, natural environment and are geared towards a client’s unique property and the relationship between their lifestyle and their landscape… how they live in their landscape.”
Still an eager traveler, Patrick now plans his wandering around opportunities to tour private gardens, landscapes of merit and historic properties, keeping his finger on the pulse of emerging design trends.
Patrick has been involved with numerous organizations, including the Old Oak Cliff Conservation League, Oak Cliff Garden Tours and The Garden Conservancy. Currently he is working with the Preservation Dallas’ Modern Committee to bridge the relationship between late 20th century architecture and landscape.
